Two Volunteer Projects, Clare Island, July 2010

Clare Island

July 4-10th and July 11th to 17th 2010: Join an international team of volunteers on these residential programmes to help eradicate Gunnera from the beautiful Clare Island, Co Mayo.

Join an international team of volunteers on these residential programmes to help eradicate Gunnera from the beautiful Clare Island, Co Mayo.

Conservation Services will lead a group of international volunteers on two residential, week-long (7 days, 6 nights) programmes to help eradicate Gunnera from the beautiful Clare Island, Co Mayo. Volunteers can sign up for 1 or 2 weeks but it's expected that most volunteers will be there for both weeks and priority will be given to these.

This not-to-be -missed programme is in one of the most beautiful spots in the West of Ireland. If you don't believe us, read about it here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/apr/08/escape.ireland.restandrelaxation

  Project Description:
Volunteers will be helping to remove the invasive species Gunnera Ticntoria from Clare Island. This will be done using a combination of methods including digging using spades and application of herbecide where necessary. Full training and safety preparation will be provided to volunteers.

Projects run from Sundays to Saturdays. Volunteers must make their own way to Wesport in Co Mayo for the Sunday morning. We will then head out to the island where a briefing will take place. We work Monday to Friday and pack up Saturday morning.

General information for volunteers:

  • Communal  accommodation will be provided to all volunteers free of charge.
  • We will provide safety equipment, work-related insurance and safety talks.
  • We will also provide transport to the site (ex Westport, Co May0).
  • Volunteers chip in together for food.
  • Participation on the project is largely free but we will require a non-refundable admin/booking fee of €40  (Due to this programme's popularity we want to ensure that everybody who takes a place will be there.) This is nornally paid throgh PayPal.

The things you need to bring:

  • Warm working clothes, Sturdy Shoes, Rain gear. Sleeping bag and pillow and personal hygiene gear. There will be a few social outings to local attractions during the week. So some good clothes would be an idea.

Interested volunteers should contact volunteer@conservationservices.ie. Booking is on a first-com first served basis on receiving booking deposit.

You can see some photos and follow updates on the projects on Facebook at
